In a significant move to drive global adoption of its unique digital identity system, Worldcoin, a leading player in the blockchain technology space, has announced a strategic migration to Optimism, the Ethereum layer 2 scaling solution. This development heralds a new era of speed, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness for the Worldcoin ecosystem.
Moreover, in response to the increasing global demand for secure and private digital identities, Worldcoin is planning a major expansion of its World ID infrastructure. The project intends to increase the number of available Orbs, its custom biometric imaging devices, to 1.5K. This will be rolled out throughout the summer and fall in more than 35 cities across five continents.
Over the last six months of its beta phase, the Worldcoin project has verified the uniqueness and humanness of over 40,000 individuals per week. With the availability of 1.5K additional Orbs, Worldcoin is poised to quintuple its sign-up capacity, enabling millions more individuals to join the 2 million already enrolled in World ID.
Countries with substantial World ID user bases, such as Spain, where over 150K people have already been verified, will see Worldcoin scaling up its existing operations by up to three times in the coming months. Pop-up locations in countries such as France and Brazil will provide an opportunity for individuals to locate a nearby Orb and sign up for World ID.
The Orb, originally developed by Tools for Humanity (TFH), is the world’s first custom biometric imaging device for verifying humanness and uniqueness in a secure, privacy-preserving manner. Anyone with a World ID-compatible wallet, such as TFH’s World App, can sign up for World ID at an Orb by visiting a Worldcoin Operator location or a community specialist.
Worldcoin will be introducing the new Orbs in over 35 cities in 20+ countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe between now and the end of 2023. These locations include cities where Orbs are currently available and those that will see the installation of Orbs in the near future. Locations and reservations, where necessary, will be available via the World App.
